After holding the mighty Chelsea to draw in the first leg, Wycombe will need another super-human effort if they want to make it the Carling Cup final.

Everton are holding talks with Benfica to sign midfielder Manuel Fernandes, with a view to signing the player on a six-month loan deal until the end of the season.

The 20-year-old spent the first half of the season on loan at Portsmouth, who were priced out of a permanent deal.

A statement on Everton’s website said: “He will come for an initial six-month loan. Then we would have an option to make the move permanent in the summer.

“We have been in discussions with Benfica and representatives regarding the possibility of a loan move until the end of the season,” added Everton chief executive Keith Wyness.

“As part of that process he is currently undergoing a medical at Bellefield. However, the transaction is not complete.”
