Everton have completed the signing of Dutch defender Johnny Heitinga.

The Toffees are thought to have concluded a £6.2million deal to sign Heitinga from Atletico Madrid on a four-year contract.

The 25-year-old Dutch international arrived at the club’s Finch Farm training ground on Monday to complete the deal having been in talks over the weekend.

Chief Executive Robert Elstone said: “We are pleased the deal has been completed to get John into Everton. He is a very experienced player having played at both Ajax and Atletico Madrid and I know David Moyes is looking forward to getting him started.”

Heitinga joined Atletico from Ajax last summer and has made 47 appearances for Holland.

Everton boss David Moyes was looking to reinforce his defensive ranks following the departure of Joleon Lescott and has already signed Sylvain Distin from Portsmouth.

Heitinga has been handed the number five jersey – Lescott’s former squad number – and flew back out of Liverpool to link up with the Holland squad for this weeks round of international matches.
