The Football Association has denied reports that England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson will walk out after the Euro 2004 finals and join Real Madrid.

Eriksson signed a new deal last month which keeps him in the England job until the 2008 World Cup. But the Swede has been tipped to replace Real coach Carlos Queiroz, whose position looks vulnerable following Madrid”s Champions League exit on Tuesday. .

However, an FA spokesman denied there was a release clause in Eriksson’s contract relating to either Euro 2004 or Real.

“In an ideal world I would have liked to wait until after Euro 2004, but that was more or less impossible with all the speculation,” he said.

“I have added to that speculation. From where I’m coming from there is nothing wrong in listening to other people, other clubs, in England as well as other countries.

“But it’s best to kill the rumours.”

Eriksson has been a target for several top clubs in Europe, with Real and Inter Milan rumoured to be among them. E-mail this to a friend Printable version Links to more England stories Ê
