Sir Alex Ferguson is looking forward to Manchester United’s Champions League quarter-final against Roma.

The Premiership leaders meet the Italian side over two legs with the winners playing either Milan or Bayern Munich for a place in the final.

“We have never played Roma before, so it is new,” he said.

“That is the great excitement in Europe. You play teams you have never played before.”

Ferguson was impressed that Roma managed to knock out dark horses Lyon in the last round.

“We respect their last result. They have some great players like (Daniele) De Rossi and (Alessandro) Mancini,” he added.

“Obviously we do not look beyond this game.

“We must concentrate on this game and we are looking forward to it.”

Ferguson has also confirmed that talkshave begun with Cristiano Ronaldo about a new contract.

“Cristiano is at the right club,” said Ferguson.

“He wants to stay. Why should he want to go anywhere else?

“We have been negotiating for a few weeks now and hopefully we can come to an agreement where he will stay with us for the next few years.

“When you are negotiating, you hope eventually a compromise situation will be reached somewhere along the line.

“We want to reach an agreement because the boy has been a fantastic player for us.”
