Luis Fernandez has admitted he has been contacted about the possibility of taking ocver at Athletic Bilbao.

Fernandez managed the Basque club between 1996 and 2000, and he is currently out of work having left Israeli club Beitar Jerusalem at the end of last season.

“There are contacts with various clubs, amongst them Athletic, but they are not direct conversations,” he explained.

“I have an agent in Spain and we’ll see what happens. It’s a league I like a lot and would like to return to, but while there is a coach there (Athletic Bilbao), nothing will happen.”

Athletic have struggled this season and currently sit 16th in La Primera having taken just eight points from their opening ten matches.

The position of coach Felix Sarriugarte, who only replaced Javier Clemente in the summer, has come under scrutiny and Fernandez would appear to be the front-runner to replace him.
