Cesar Ferrando’s position as coach of Atletico Madrid looks in jeopardy after the club’s president Enrique Cerezo stated that he should not have renewed his contract.

“Seeing the results we were wrong to renew Ferrando’s contract and at the moment the supporters wouldn’t understand if he continued at the club,” Cerezo told Spanish radio station Cadena Cope.

Ferrando joined from Albacete in the close season, and had his one-year contract extended by a further 12 months in November last year.

“I have asked for time and we will make a decision in about two weeks. It would be an about turn if we did decided to change, but it is also possible that we won’t do anything.”

Atletico have slipped to 11th in the Primera Liga and they were knocked out of the King’s Cup by Osasuna last week.

After their cup exit, there were callls from supporters for him to quit, but Ferrando intends to stay.

“Leaving would be a coward’s option, but if the club tells me to leave I will go and I will accept the decision,” he said.
