Quique Sanchez Flores is to step down as coach of Benfica after the two parties agreed to end the Spaniard’s contract a year early.

Flores joined the Portuguese club in May 2008 and, with club director Rui Costa, spent lavishly last summer to bring in the likes of Jose Antonio Reyes, Pablo Aimar and David Suazo.

Despite that influx of talent, they could only finish in third place, 11 points behind champions Porto and seven adrift of local rivals Sporting.

Media reports have said Braga coach Jorge Jesus is likely to sign an agreement with Benfica this week.
