Diego Forlan has revealed that he would be delighted to play for Atletico Madrid next season.

The Uruguayan appears to be surplus requirements at Manchester United following the arrivals of Louis Saha in January and the summer signing of Alan Smith.

“Of course it would enchant me to play for Atletico Madrid. I know they have faithful fans, I have spoken to fellow countrymen who have played for Atletico and they say once you have played there you never want to leave,” Forlan said in an interview with Spanish paper Marca.

The 25-year-old striker is currently in Peru, representing his country in the Copa America, but would like the deal done as soon as possible.

“It is a proud moment when a team is interested in you. Atletico are one of the biggest clubs in the world and my agent is negotiating a transfer there,” he said.

Forlan also revealed this is the second time the Madrid club have made a move for him, the first being when he was still at Independiente. When no agreement was reached, Manchester United stepped in to take him to Old Trafford.

The Uruguayan is also excited at the possibility of linking up with Atletico’s Spanish international striker Fernando Torres.

“He is a player whose reputation is growing at an incredible rate. He has amazing skill,” said Forlan.
