Former Australia international Craig Moore could be jailed in the United Arab Emirates after being arrested on alcohol-related charges.
Moore, who represented the Socceroos at the World Cup before retiring from football, is being detained by UAE police.
On Thursday he allegedly broke the UAE’s strict alcohol laws, which ban public intoxication or public consumption of alcohol, before getting into a disagreement with police officers, according to reports.
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has assisted Moore and was able to confirm his wellbeing.
Moore’s former coach, Brisbane Roar boss Ange Postecoglou, told reporters: “It’s a surprise. It’s a tough situation and he’s got a family and obviously he would want to get home pretty quickly.”
Moore left Roar when Postecoglou took over from former coach Frank Farina midway through last A-League season.
