Former England full-back Gary Charles has been jailed for four months today after he was convicted of driving his sports car into a garden wall and being found drunk in charge of the vehicle.

The defender, who played for a string of English clubs including Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa as well as a brief spell in Europe with Portuguese giants Benfica, crashed his Mercedes in Derbyshire last September.

The 33-year-old, who was capped twice for his country in 1991 but forced to retire because of injury in 2002, was also banned from driving for four years.
