Manchester City are expected to sign Leeds’ striker Robbie Fowler after the clubs agreed a fee of £5m for the former Liverpool forward.

The Maine Road club have been given permission to speak to the 27-year-old and they are now trying to agree personal terms with Fowler. The striker who has been out for much of this season with injury, will then undergo a medical.

If the deal goes through, it will be the fourth major departure from Elland Road since Venables replaced David O’Leary as manager. Rio Ferdinand, Robbie Keane and Lee Bowyer have all been sold, while Olivier Dacourt has joined Roma on loan until the end of the season.

Fowler has scored two goals in seven Premiership games for Leeds this season. Since moving to Elland Road in an £11m move 15 months ago, Fowler has played in 32 games and scored 14 goals.
