German midfielder Steffen Freund has taken a parting shot at Kaiserslautern after the Bundesliga strugglers released him last week.

“The team has got no character,” fumed Freund.

“There is no sense of loyalty, team spirit or respect.

“Every new player at the club is immediately confronted with the problem of not being accepted.

“Lots of things are wrong – I wanted to try and help change them, but failed.”

The 34-year-old was axed alongside former Kaiserslautern captain Markus Anfang and Thomas Hengen as manager Erik Gerets looks to keep his side in Germany’s top flight.

“I was shocked at being thrown in together with Markus Anfang and Thomas Hengen,” he added.

“One could criticise them for some things, but not me.”
