Fernando Gago’s agent has hinted the Real Madrid player may be forced to leave Santiago Bernabeu in January in order to secure his World Cup place.

The Argentina international has spent much of the season on the bench this season following the big-money signing of Xabi Alonso form Liverpool.

Gago believes his World Cup place under Diego Maradona is in jeopardy and he is keen to gain first-team football.

Gago’s agent Marcello Lombilla insists his client’s unhappiness is not about money, but rather concern at a lack of playing time.

“It’s not a question of money, what Gago wants is match rhythm, because the World Cup is getting close and he wants Maradona to pick him for the squad,” Lombilla told Marca.

“It’s no good to me to have a player who is not happy with his club, Gago is not playing and when Gago is not playing, he stays at home crying.”

Lombilla’s partner Zoran Vekic is aware of interest from Serie A, however, he insists no move will occur unless Real agree to his departure.

“Italian clubs like Gago but so far we’ve not been officially contacted by any teams,” explained Vekic.

“From now until January there are possibilities, but it all depends on Real Madrid. There will be no deal unless Real tell us that they want to sell him.

“A return to Boca is totally impossible in my opinion. A loan deal? This depends on Real, although I think it’s unlikely that they would consider this option for a player of this quality.”
