Fiorentina defender Alessandro Gamberini has undergone shoulder surgery that could rule him out for the rest of the season.

The Italian defender picked up the injury during Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Sampdoria and will not return until May at the earliest.

Gamberini’s absence is a blow for Fiorentina, who face Bayern Munich in the first kncokout round of the Champions League on Wednesday.

A statement from the club read: “Gamberini underwent surgery on his shoulder and will need two-and-a-half months to fully recover.”
