The former captain of Genoa, Gianluca Signorini died of Lou Gehrig’s disease last night aged 42.

Signorini, who started his career Pisa Calcio in Serie C1, moved to Roma in 1987, before becoming a mainstay of Genoa’s strongest post-war side.

In 1992 he led Genoa to the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup he following year signed for Genoa where he was to become captain. Signorini retired in 1995 after playing 210 matches in Serie A and scoring six goals.

Last year, a benefit match to raise funds for research Lou Gehrig’s disease and also for Signorini’s children, was attended by more than 25,000 spectators at the Luigi Ferraris stadium in Genoa.
