The German federation is negotiating for a new major sponsor to replace Deutsche Telekom, whose deal expires at the end of the year.

Reports from Germany say talks have reached an advanced stage with the mobile telephone operation E-Plus.

A spokesman for E-Plus denied, however, that agreement was close. She said: “It’s true we are in discussions with the DFB but we receive a lot of sponsorship proposals each year. We are certainly not on the brink of signing anything.”

Deutsche Telekom will be switching its football sponsorship focus after this year since it has signed up with FIFA to be one of the top-level sponsors of the 2006 World Cup to be staged in Germany.
