Steven Gerrard will captain England for the first time in Wednesday’s friendly against Sweden.

The game in Gothenburg will be the first time Sven-Goran Eriksson has been without regular skipper David Beckham and deputy Michael Owen.

Gerrard, the captain of Liverpool, was chosen ahead of more experienced colleagues such as Gareth Southgate or David James.
