Gimnastic have sacked coach Luis Angel Cesar after the club dropped to the bottom of the Primera Liga after Sunday’s 3-2 defeat to Reaal Mallorca.

“The board would like to thank him for his part in winning promotion to the Primera Liga and for his exemplary behaviour through some difficult times, especially over the last few weeks,” the club said on their official web site.

Cesar said: “It is an understandable decision. When coaches aren’t winning games you have to get rid of them and that is what has happened.

“There’s no point wasting time looking back on what I could have done differently. I am proud of what I have achieved in my two years at the club, and in the 12 games of this season the players have done what they could.”

The Catalan club won promotion to the top flight for the first time in 56 years at the end of last season. but a poor start to the season which has seen them take just five points from the first 12 games of the campaign.

Cesar’s assistant Kiko Ramirez and fitness coach Xavier Bartolo will take charge on a temporary basis, the club said.
