Avram Grant, who has recently returned to Portsmouth to become their director of football, turned dowm the chance of a similar job at MLS’s New York Red Bulls, according to the Israeli’s agent.

Don Barnett, who represents Grant in the United States, confirmed that the former Chelsea boss was discussing a combined head coach and sporting director role at the currently managerless Red Bulls.

”Grant would make history in New York based on the demographics of the area,” Barnett told the New York Times. ”With all the Jewish residents and expat Israelis in the area, coupled with his profile at Chelsea, he would have raised the profile of Red Bull to a higher level on and off the field – and helped to sell tickets and attract players. He wants the job but I guess he couldn’t wait on them any longer.”

The struggling Red Bulls will see out the MLS season playing under caretaker coach Richie Williams following the resignation of Juan Carlos Osorio in late August.
