The Los Angeles Galaxy refused to comment on reports claiming that Ruud Gullit was set to become their new coach.

A report on Sky Sports suggested the former Chelsea and Newcastle manager was poised to take over from Frank Yallo.

Yallop quit the Galaxy on Sunday to return to San Jose for a second stint in charge of the Earthquakes.

Galaxy president Alexi Lalas said on Monday that the club were looking to appoint a ‘sexy type of candidate’ to replace Yallop.

Lalas said: “There certainly is interest in a high-profile, sexy type of candidate – not simply because this is the Galaxy and this is Los Angeles, but because we are looking to bring in somebody who can do something different.”

Gullit, who coined the phrase ‘sexy foootball’ when he was in charge at Chelsea, was most recently in charge at Feyenoord, but quit in 2005 after one season in charge.
