Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze hopes to be fit again in time for next year’s World Cup finals in Germany.

The left back has been ruled out for the whole of the current season since suffering a knee injury in United’s Champions League encounter with Villarreal in September.

Although he is not expected to play for United this season, Heinze is confident that he can still play a part in next summer’s World Cup.

“I have to control myself and not get too anxious,” said Heinze.

”I had a phone call from Diego Simeone a few days ago and that was really good for me because he told me that he had the same injury as me before playing the World Cup in 2002. His words were really helpful for me.

“Simeone told me that he had exactly the same injury and he gave me advice not to pay attention to those that are saying that I will not wear the national shirt again.”
