Emile Heskey has turned down an approach from Middlesbrough regarding a move to the Riverside, but there is speculation that European Cup-holders Milan are interested in signing the England striker.

Although there has been no official approach from Italy, intermediaries apparently working on behalf of the Serie A club have made contact with Liverpool to determine how much Heskey would cost.

“We are not looking for a striker,” said the club’s sporting director Ariedo Braida, “and it’s unlikely that we will make a move in the January transfer window.”

However, the Italians may revive their inetrest in the summer when Heskey’s place at Anfield is expected to come under threat from the arrival of French striker Djibril Cisse.

Boro lodged an official inquiry this week but Heskey is understoood to be reluctant to make the switch.
