Portuguese side Boavista made it to the semi-finals of the UEFA cup last night after a dramatic penalty shoot-out in which goalkeeper Ricardo was the hero.

After a 1-0 win to Malaga in the first leg, Boavista had home advantage last night and made it tell by sending Malaga out of the competition. After Boavista equalized in the 82nd minute last night to make the tie all square, it was up to Ricardo to win the game and after scoring his side’s first penalty, the shot-stopper then saved Bravo’s penalty to send his side through.

Boavista coach Jaime Pacheco was happy with the result which is one of the biggest in the club’s history.

“This was a historic night for Boavista,” said Pacheco.

“The players deserve all the praise we can give them”.

Boavista are now the second Portuguese team to reach the semi-finals, a nation which has never held the cup and with two teams in the semis optimism in Portugal is high.
