Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe has denied striking a deal with Glenn Hoddle to become the next manager of Southampton.

Speculation has been growing that former England coach Hoddle will be appointed to succeed Gordon Strachan – with an appointment possibly coming as soon as this week.

“No decision has been made about a new manager,’ LOwe told the BBC.

‘We are keeping our options open and will name a new manager when it is right for us. “Newspaper speculation is not helping our search for a new manager.”

Hoddle’s return to St Mary’s would not be universally welcomed by the club’s supporters still angry following his controversial departure from the post two years ago. Many have not forgiven Hoddle for walking out on the club to take over at Tottenham Hotspur.

When Hoddle walked out, Southampton were seventh in the table, having won five successive Premiership games. The former England coach was sacked nine games into this season following a dreadful start to the new campaign.

Southampton’s search for a new manager arises from Strachan’s decision not to renew his contract at the end of the season.
