Middlesbrough have withdrawn from the race to sign Chelsea’s Robert Huth, after the German defender failed a medical.

The 21-year-old was set to seal a £5m switch but an ankle injury picked up shortly before the World Cup appears to have torpedoed the deal.

Boro manager Gareth Southgate told the club’s website: “It’s a great shame for everyone involved that Robert won’t be joining us at the present time.

“But I’m continuing to pursue a number of avenues towards new signings.

“Any signings will be those I believe to be in the best interests – not just now but for the next years – so we will take our time to ensure we get the right people in.”

Huth missed most of Germany’s World Cup campaign because of the injury and it is thought that it could be more serious than was first thought.
