Javier Irureta has confirmed he intends to stay on at Deportivo La Coruna boss next season.

Irureta had been expected to step down from his post when his contract expires at the end of the campaign.

After a disappointing start to the season, which included a dismal Champions League campaign, Irureta intimated that he would leave the club in the summer.

However, with Depor enjoyng an upturn in form in recent months, Irureta has admitted that he will extend his stay at the Riazor.

“There are nine games left and I have to try to get the team to finish as high as possible, hopefully in the Champions League places and if not in the Uefa Cup,” he said.

“This would bring with it the hopes and aims that I have which are to continue at Deportivo and in La Coruna, and to satisfy the desires that I still have.

“I have not spoken to the president about this matter because I still don’t believe it is the time to,” he continued.

“I think everything will become settled in the next few games although our personal relationship is good.”
