Josemi has completed his transfer from Liverpool to Villarreal – in a swap deal which will see Dutch Jan Kromkamp move to Anfield from the Spanish club.

Kromkamp has agreed terms with Liverpool and should complete his move on Tuesday.

Speaking at a news conference, Josemi, said: “Myself and my family are really happy to be returning.

“I’m thankful to Villarreal for giving me this chance.”

Josemi was Rafael Benitez’s first signing for Liverpool, in 2004 from Malaga, but he made just six Premiership appearances.

“I wasn’t given all the chances I had hoped I would get at Liverpool,” he added. “Now I want to recover the sort of form I showed when I played at Malaga.”

Dutch international Kromkamp moved to Spain from AZ Alkmaar in the summer.

“Josemi is a right-back with some problems here with English, and Kromkamp has problems with Spanish,” said Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez.

“Maybe this swap will be good for both of them. Josemi is happy here, but he sometimes prefers to talk in Spanish.

“Kromkamp has the same problem at Villarreal with the Spanish language.”
