Juventus admit they look set to lose out to Liverpool in the race to sign West Ham’s Argentinian midfielder Javier Mascherano.

Liverpool are known to be keen on signing Mascherano on loan for the rest of the season, but recent reports had suggested that Juventus were launching a fresh bid to bring the midfielder to Italy.

The situation is complicated by the Fifa rule which states that a player cannot represent more than two clubs in the space of 12 months and West Ham boss Alan Curbishley has declared that he expects Mascherano, and international colleague Carlos Tevez to stay at Upton Park.

Juve’s general director Alessio Secco confirmed that the MSI-owned player is close to a move to Anfield.

“Mascherano? It is a complicated situation either on a federal level or for his ownership,” Secco told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Anyway now he is really close to Liverpool.”
