DFB president Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder has expressed his support for Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

Klinsmann has been criticised in the German press lately following last weekend’s defeat in Slovakia and his continued dithering over the identity of his number one goalkeeper.

“Everyone must understand that we are bound to have a few setbacks along the way,” Mayer-Vorfelder told the Hamburger Abendblatt.

“Klinsmann has to build a completely new team and he can’t do that overnight,” he said.

“I am, however, absolutely convinced that he will do it in time (for the World Cup),” he added.

“One has to have goals, and one is allowed to have goals that might seem a bit exaggerated to outsiders.

“If Klinsmann didn’t set himself this goal then it would appear as though he was giving up too early.”
