Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany has played down talk that he could be tempted to join Barcelona.

The 23-year-old is said to be one of a number of defensive candidates being pursued by the European champions if Carles Puyol or Rafael Marquez do not sign new deals at Camp Nou soon.

Though both are expected to sign extensions at the Catalan club, back-up is also being considered, and Kompany was reportedly on Barca’s list of targets before he joined City.

“I’ve always wanted to be one of the main players in a big team that wins trophies. I’ve just signed a new deal and City’s ambitions are the same as mine,” he told reporters in England.

Barca were also linked with Arsenal’s Emmanuel Eboue by The Sun, but having added Dmytro Chygrynskiy to their ranks in the summer, such a move for a defender appears unlikely.
