Former Ukraine manager Leonid Buryak has been named as the new coach of Dynamo Kiev.

Buryak succeeds Josef Sabo, who resigned following a 3-2 defeat to arch-rivals Shakhtar Donetsk in the last game of the season on Thursday.

“I’ve spent many years playing for this club, always giving my best and now I want to give the same effort as Dynamo coach,” said Buryak.

The former midfielder won 49 caps for the Soviet national team.

Dynamo have had a disappointing season, failing to progress past the Champions League group stage and also finishing seven points behind their rivals Shakhtar Donetsk.

“We were looking at a number of top coaches, including foreigners, but we decided to go with one of our own,” said Dynamo president Igor Surkis.

“In naming Buryak we’re following the Lobanovsky tradition of hiring back those who have played for our club in the past.”
