Liverpool are poised to launch an £8m bid for striker Fernando Morientes, according to reports.

The Real Madrid striker is currently behind Raul, Ronaldo and Michael Owen at the Bernabeu and he has made no secret of his desire to secure regular first team action.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is keen to bolster his forward options with Djibril Cisse out until next season.

Real have sanctioned Morientes’ sale, and the player’s preference is understood to be a transfer to Anfield, though Real will only sell at the right price.

The Spanish club would be looking for up to £10m for the striker, who has 18 months of his current contract to run, having signed an extension last summer. That fee would prove prohibitive to Liverpool, but Real are keen to secure the cash as they are reported to be preparing a huge summer bid for Inter striker Adriano.

“If there is an attractive propostition it could be I would be keen to leave,” admitted the 28-year-old Morientes.

He added: “Unfortunately, I’m not in control of the situation. I’m under contract to Real and they will make any decisions.”
