Mali midfielder Mohamed Sissoko, who had been discussing a move to Everton, has decided to join Liverpool instead.

Sissoko, who joins from Spanish side Valencia, still needs to complete a medical before finalising his move to Anfield.

“He’s a young central midfielder who plays a high energy game with a high tempo. He’s young, he’s not bad on the ball and he will improve the balance of our team,” said Benitez.

“He’s had two good years with Valencia where he has won trophies. I know him well and he’s a very good player.”

It is believed that the 20-year-old Sissoko will cost Liverpool around £5m.

Benitez also confirmed the Liverpool are waiting to hear whether they’ll be able to sign Luis Figo.

“At the moment all we can do is wait,” said Benitez. “We have some possibilities and Figo is one of them. We’ll have to wait and see. I’m happy with the squad we have at the moment but we’re still trying to bring in two or three more players.”
