Claudio Lopez, the former Valencia and Lazio striker will today sign for Mexican side America.

‘Piojo’ Lopez has agreed to the deal with the Azteca-based team after Lazio acceded to his request for a free transfer.

Cash-strapped Lazio are desperate to remove the high earners from their wage bill, and Lopez was seen as an unnecessary luxury by the club.

At his unveiling, it was announced that the transfer took a little longer than expected due to the number of teams competing for his signature.

However, Lopez will now join the side in time for the new season in August. He will become America’s second high profile signing of the close season, following in the wake of Brazilian winger Djalminha.
