Atletico Madrid could be punished by the Spanish FA after their fans subjected Real full-back Rovberto Carlos to a volley of racist abuse during Sunday’s Madrid derby match.

The Brazilian was singled out for abuse at during another shameful night for Spanish football.

The chanting became so bad at one point that a message was passed on to club officials, who put out a request over the loudspeaker asking for the abuse to stop. But the Atlético fans continued their chants.

England’s Shaun Wright-Phillips and Ashley Cole were abused during a friendly against Spain at Real Madrid’s Bernabeu stadium in November.

Real won the game 3-0 thanks to two goals from Ronaldo and another from Santiago Solari.

“I managed to make the most of the chances that came my way and for that I’m happy,” said Ronaldo afterwards.

“And Luxemburgo, I think he’s a great coach and I think many more people will be soon be thinking the same now that he’s coaching here in Spain.”

Thw win helped Real reduce the deficit on leaders Barcelona, who crashed to a surprise 3-0 defeat at the hands of Villarreal.

Former Manchester United striker Deigo Forlan scored twice as Barca’s lead over Real and Valencia, was cut to seven points.
