Manchester United are reported to be trying to scuppper Middlesbrough’s attempts to sign Geremi from Real Madrid, by making an œ9m bid for the Cameroon international.

Middlesbrough had hoped to seal a deal for the 24-year-old who has spent this season on loan at the Riverside, but the club are reluctant to meet Real Madrid’s £9 million valuation of the player.

Now United are understood have opened negotiations with the Spanish side.

Middlesbrough were told earlier in the season that it would cost them £9.6 million if they wished to sign Geremi on a permanet basis. However, the prospect of a move to Old Trafford may prove too great a lure for the player.
