Javier Mascherano has reportedly told Liverpool he wants to leave the club following talks with new manager Roy Hodgson.

The Argentina midfielder returned for pre-season training on Monday after being incommunicado for several weeks following the World Cup finals.

The new Anfield Reds boss met with Mascherano and the player’s agent Walter Tamer to discuss his future and according to reports, the midfielder has informed the club he wants to leave.

Inter, now coached by former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez, have been linked with a £25million bid for Mascherano.

His representative Tamer has previously suggested a move to the European champions would be a ‘dream’ for Mascherano.

Mascherano joined Liverpool from West Ham in January 2007 after just six months at Upton Park and he has made almost 140 appearances during his time on Merseyside.
