Maxi Rodriguez’s agent has confirmed Liverpool are in talks to sign the Atletico Madrid winger, but reports indicate that he may be the club’s only signing of the transfer window.

Liverpool have lined up a move for Rodriguez as his current contract is due to expire in the summer and his representative, Jose Segui, has confirmed a deal is close.

“We are working. It’s true we have spoken [with Liverpool], but there is nothing definitive,” Segui told calciomercato.it. “Juventus? We have spoken with Liverpool and other sides, but never with Juventus.

“As for Liverpool, I don’t know when the negotiation could be closed. It’s up to the two clubs and to their decision. Anyway it would be a permanent transfer.”

However, it appears that Liverpool manager, Rafa Benitez, is set to be limited to signing just one new player on loan in addition to the £1.5 million spent on Rodriguez.

Napoli have agreed a £4.5 million deal to sign Andrea Dossena, while Andriy Voronin is close to signing for Dynamo Moscow in a £2 million deal. Another £2 million will be received when Philipp Degen moves on – possibly to Germany – while Ryan Babel could move to Birmingham if they can match Liverpool’s £12 million of the player.

Even with player sales, Liverpool’s executives are reported to be keen use the January income as part of a war chest in the summer.
