Barcelona forward Lionel Messi will miss both legs of their Champions League semi-final clash with Milan.

The Argentina international will fly out to his homeland this week as he bids to recover from a thigh strain that has kept him out of action since the beginning of March.

Argentine national team doctor Donato Villani has confirmed that Messi is likely to miss the remainder of their domestic season.

“It’s a complicated sort of tear,” said Villani. “He’s going to need three or four more weeks treatment.

“In my opinion he will be ready to play only one more game this season and that will be the Champions League final.”

Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard admits he is unsure as to when his player will be available again for selection.

“He needs more time,” said Rijkaard.

“It might be good for him to have a change of scenery and recover completely. He will return when he has recovered.”
