Milan retained a nine-point lead at the top of Serie A despite being held to a 2-2 with unfancied Chievo.

Milan were two goals down at half-time before goals from Andrea Pirlo and Andrei Shevchenko in the final ten minutes salvaged a draw.

Roma are now eleven points behind the league leaders after losing 2-1 at home to Bologna.

Juventus moved into second-place after a 3-1 win against Modena. All the goals came in the second-half with two from David Trezeguet and one from Enzo Maresca – Massimo Marazzina got Modena’s consolation.

The battle for the fourth champions league place is still a close affair. Lazio remain fourth after beating Perugia 2-1 but Parma are level on points with the Rome club after thrashing Empoli 4-0.

Inter lie in sixth, one point behind, after beating Reggina 2-0 with an own goal from Emiliano Bonazzoli and a late strike from their Brazilian, Adriano.

Bottom-placed Ancona are still looking for their first league win of the season after they lost 5-2 to Brescia. Ancona did manage to improve their goals scored this season to 13, but were over-powered by Brescia with Roberto Baggio (2), Gilberto Martinez, Guiseppe Colucci and Andrea Caracciolo all scoring.
