Michael Ballack will return to the Bayern Munich side back for Wednesday’s German Cup quarter-final away to SC Freiburg, but the news of his return was offset by the loss of playmaker Mehmet Scholl for next week’s Champions League tie with Arsenal.

Ballack has been out since mid-February with a thigh muscle strain but he returned to training this week and coach Felix Magath confirmed that he would play against Freiburg.

“I want to send out my strongest possible team,” said Magath.

“Of course Ballack will be in it. This is going to be a tough game.”

Scholl meanwhile, who has been in inspirational form this season, will miss next week’s Champions League return leg against Arsenal, after tearing a after a thigh muscle at the weekend in Bayern’s 1-0 win over Freiburg.
