Real Madrid director general Jorge Valdano believes that Jose Mourinho will be confirmed as the new manager at the Bernabeu by next Tuesday.
The Spanish outfit want to appoint the Inter boss after sacking Manuel Pellegrini earlier this week.
Inter, though, are demanding full compensation, which is believed to be worth €16million, and so negotiations with Real have slowed.
Nonetheless, Valdano is still confident a deal will be tied up in the next few days, saying: “Mourinho will arrive in Madrid, probably next week.
“He may arrive on Tuesday, Monday is almost impossible.”
Valdano believes the coaching change was necessary after claiming Pellegrini failed in the key games.
He added: “Pellegrini created a very good working environment, avoiding dressing room conflicts and he had an impeccable record in the league.
“But in the most important games of the season he was not able to succeed and so we decided to dismiss him.”
