Jorge Mendes, the agent of Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho, has confirmed that his client expects to sign a new, improved deal with the club.

The former Porto manager was disappointed that Chelsea had failed to launch an appeal against the two-match ban imposed by UEFA over comments regarding referee Anders Frisk after the UEFA Champions League game in Barcelona.

However, according to sources in Portugal, the club have offered Mourinho a new five-year contract worth around £5 million per year.

“The negotiations are going well and nearing an end,” Mendes told The London Evening Standard. “It will be concluded very soon, maybe even on Thursday.”

News that Mourinho is considering signing a new deal will come as a relief to the Chelsea hierarchy. There had been speculation that he was considering his future in West London.

Mourinho is banned from the touchline at Stamford Bridge for the Bayern clash after being charged by Uefa, and he has stated that he will not even be atthe ground for tonight’s match.
