Everton manager David Moyes has wanred that his teenage protege Wayne Rooney mustbe allowed to develop away from the glare of the media spotlight.

Rooney was a second-half substitute on Sunday as Everton beat West Ham United 1-0 at Upton Park, but Moyes was unhappy with attention that the teenager received on the bench.

Moyes said: “You lot follow him off the bus, follow him during the warm up. You should leave him alone. it’s not helping him.

“He is a terrific English talent and we are all trying to help him as much as we can. You should understand that, and he should be respected.

“But he needs breathing space.”
