Sevilla defender Javi Navarro has been given a five-match ban by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) for a challenge that knocked Real Mallorca forward Juan Arango unconscious during a recent league match.

“We gave the ban for violent play,” RFEF Competitions Committee president Alfredo Florez told Radio Marca.

“There was no evidence of the action being deliberate, however, and we also took into account the fact that the player showed immediate regret for his actions.”

Navarro collided with Venezuelan international Arango when the two players went for a 50-50 ball during Mallorca’s 1-0 defeat at home to Sevilla on March 20.

Arango suffered a broken right cheekbone and required 40 stitches to a face wound.
