Newcastle have abandoned their attempt to sign Fenerbahce striker Nicolas Anelka.

Graeme Souness’ time tabled a bid for the French international earlier this month, but the offer was turned down by Fenerbahce.

Magpies chairman Freddy Shepherd confirmed that the club will now look elsewhere.

“As Nicolas Anelka has only been at Fenerbahce for six months and the club have said he’s never been for sale, we have been requested not to pursue the matter any further and we have agreed to do this,” Shepherd told the club’s official website.

“However, I can assure our supporters that we are still actively exploring other options in the transfer market.”
