Newcastle United have agreed a fee with Internazionale for Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins.

The fee for the 21-year-old is undisclosed but is thought to be in the region of £10m.

“It is now up to the player and the agent to agree terms on the offer,” chairman Freddy Shepherd told the Newcastle website.

Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder has been desperate to sign a new striker following Alan Shearer’s retirement and Michael Owen’s knee injury which will keep him out of action for the bulk of the season.

Martins’ place at Inter has looked in jeopardy since the club brought in Sweden’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Argentine Hernan Crespo to strengthen their forward line.

The 21-year-old Martins, who joined Inter in 2002, is highly regarded and looks set to transfer his talents to the Premiership.

“Playing in the Premiership has been a long-term ambition and I am extremely delighted with the prospect of concluding that in the next couple of days,” Martins said.
