Three Nigerian players sent home from the African Nations Cup for disciplinary reasons are to be re-called to the squad.

Portsmouth’s Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Schalke 04’s Victor Agali and Chelsea defender Celestine Babayaro were sent home last Friday for breaking camp rules.

Speaking after Nigeria reached the quarter-finals with a 2-1 win over Benin, Chukwu said: “About the three players who were suspended, I will now say the suspension has been lifted and the players will join us any moment from now.

“The three players have shown remorse about what they did. They have apologised and that’s why we are forgiving them, because they are part of the team.

“When they show remorse, we have to forgive them.”

Despite calling for the trio to return, Chukwu admitted that he was unsure if any of them would fly back for the knock out stages.

“That is another question,’ said Chukwu.

‘If they come back, okay. But if they decide not to come back, we’ll go ahead.”
