Southampton have agreed a deal to bring Swedish midfielder Mikael Nilsson to the club three months early.

The 26-year-old international was due to join Southampton from Halmstad at the end of November when his contract with the Swedish club ran out, however he will now be a Saint in time for the start of the Premiership season.

The conditions of the early move have not been revealed, but Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe told the club’s official website: “It has been a tricky deal to seal but negotiations have been conducted with dignity and decorum and mutual respect.”

“We have a very good rapport and hope to maintain the good relationship between the clubs for many years to come.”

Nilsson, who played throughout Sweden’s Euro 2004 campaign, will join fellow Swedish internationals Anders Svensson – who he’ll partner in midfield- and Michael Svensson who is another ex-Halmstad player.
