Bayer Leverkusen will be without experienced defender Jens Nowotny for their Champions League clash with Liverpool on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old has picked up a knee injury and will not travel to Anfield with the rest of the squad.

Nowotny picked up the knock during Bayer’s 4-2 Bundesliga victory over Nurnberg on Saturday, and it is feared that it could keep him our of action for several months.

Sporting director Rudi Voller says that the club are concerned that Nowotny could have suffered a recurrence of the knee ligament problems that has blighted his career in the past.

“It’s not certain but it’s possible that it’s a cruciate ligament injury,” said Voller.
